Livingston/McAnally Endowment For the Cedars

Helping preserve one of Jackson’s oldest and most distinctive historic places.

The Cedars in Jackson, Mississippi

Built around 1840 by William Garland, The Cedars was originally part of the expansive Garland Plantation, which stretched across what is now north Jackson. Photo by Madeline Tess Farmer.

The Livingston/McAnally Endowment supports The Cedars, the oldest residential structure in Jackson and a longtime part of the city’s cultural and architectural history.

Built around 1840, The Cedars has served many purposes over the years. Today, it is used as an art gallery, event venue and gathering place for community programs, including visual and performing arts events.

After the property was placed on the Mississippi Heritage Trust’s Most Endangered List in 2001, the Fondren Renaissance Foundation led an effort to save and restore the home. Renovation was completed in 2004, giving The Cedars new life as a community arts and event space.

The endowment helps provide ongoing support for the preservation and care of The Cedars so the historic property can continue serving the community for years to come.
