Gleaners, Inc. Long Range Development Designated Endowment Fund

The Gleaners, Inc. Long Range Development Designated Endowment Fund provides lasting support for the organization’s work to rescue surplus food and help meet long-term nutrition needs in communities across Mississippi.

The Gleaners, Inc. Long Range Development Designated Endowment Fund was established to help sustain this work for the future.

Gleaners began in 1986 when founder Gloria Martinson saw two problems that could help solve one another: good food was going to waste while people in the Jackson area were struggling with hunger. She began collecting day-old doughnuts and soon expanded her efforts to restaurants, grocery stores and other businesses willing to donate excess food.

What started in Gloria’s kitchen grew into an organized food rescue effort that continues today. Gleaners collects surplus raw and prepared foods from grocery stores, restaurants, hospitals, churches, bakeries, food distributors and other partners, then safely sorts and redistributes those donations to nonprofit organizations serving people in need.

Today, Gleaners remains an all-volunteer organization. Its volunteers collect, sort, package and transport more than 900,000 pounds of food each year, helping make sure usable food reaches people who need it rather than going to waste.

The Gleaners, Inc. Long Range Development Designated Endowment Fund was established to help sustain this work for the future. By creating a permanent source of support, the fund helps Gleaners continue addressing community nutrition needs through food rescue and redistribution for years to come.
