Mississippi2/Bootjack & Red Memorial Project Fund
Preserving the story of Roosevelt “Red” Townes and Robert “Bootjack” McDaniels through film and public remembrance.
The Mississippi2/Bootjack & Red Memorial Project Fund supports filmmaker Talamieka Brice’s work to document and memorialize the lives of Roosevelt “Red” Townes and Robert “Bootjack” McDaniels, two Black men who were lynched in Duck Hill, Mississippi, in 1937.
Brice’s project grew from a story passed down by her grandmother and from her desire to better understand the men’s lives, the impact of their deaths on the local community and the long silence surrounding what happened. The project includes documentary filmmaking as well as efforts to create a historical marker honoring Townes and McDaniels.
Gifts to the fund help support production costs, including reenactments and other elements of the film, as well as events and memorial efforts connected to the project. Through this work, Brice hopes to preserve the story, restore dignity to the men and create space for remembrance and healing.
